Columbus is a town people drive out of their way to look at — the glass and brick and poured concrete of its churches and banks draw architecture tours from around the country — and every one of those buildings still needs a plain, cleared sidewalk in January like anywhere else. DeWitt Contracting handles the half of that picture nobody photographs: walkways along Washington Street scraped down before the tour buses and the regular Tuesday-morning traffic both show up, parking areas behind the storefronts pushed clear so nobody's stepping over a curb of refrozen slush, driveways in the neighborhoods east of downtown opened before the school buses run. The East Fork and Flatrock River both edge close to town, and a wet winter here means water finds its way into every low spot before it freezes, so ice treatment gets applied where it actually collects, not just where it's easy to reach. Famous buildings hold up fine in a snowstorm; it's the ground in front of them that needs the work.
