Wind off Lake Michigan doesn't just drop snow on Chesterton, it sculpts it — drifts pile hard against the north side of every garage and fence row near the dune line, packed tight enough to hold a boot print for a week. BladeRock works those drifts at night, headlights cutting across driveways near downtown and out toward the Indiana Dunes park boundary, because the wind that builds a drift by midnight will bury a car in it by morning if nobody moves first. Sidewalks in the old downtown blocks get cut back to concrete, church and school lots get opened before the first arrivals, and steep driveways up toward the ridge get treated so the ice underneath doesn't turn a walk to the mailbox into a fall.
