Steam still rises off the pool windows at the Monon Community Center some winter mornings before the sun has done much for the frost outside, and SunnySide Landscapes is usually already working the driveways along that stretch of the trail by then. Carmel's east side wakes up early, swimmers and walkers heading in past lawns still white with the night's frost, and clearing those driveways before the foot traffic picks up is the goal every morning. Sunrise here comes up slow over rooftops that back onto the Monon corridor, and there's a narrow window between first light and full commute when a driveway can still be cleared without dodging much traffic. The crew works fast in that window, plow first and shovel behind it, so the walk to a car door is dry by the time anyone's actually ready to leave. Watching the sun finally clear the tree line over a block of driveways already handled, frost still holding on the lawns between them, makes the whole early shift worth it.
