Kirkwood Avenue runs quiet in the hour before the shops open, snow still holding its shape along the curb outside storefronts that won't unlock for another hour. City Lawn works downtown first on a storm morning — the courthouse square and the side streets feeding into it — clearing sidewalks before foot traffic starts crossing them. From there the route moves out into the surrounding blocks, driveways and front walks salted so the walk to a parked car doesn't end in a slip. Downtown Bloomington sits low between its hills, and the cold holds through a whole storm cycle some winters instead of breaking early. The first shop usually flips its sign to open onto a square that already looks like any other weekday.
