Out along the rural routes east of Bloomfield, where mailboxes sit on posts at the end of long gravel lanes, R&S Professional Services works a snow morning from one end of the county to the other. A farm lane out here can run a quarter mile before it reaches a house, and every foot of it needs clearing before a truck or a tractor can get through. The crew plows steady, working outbuildings and turnarounds as carefully as the main stretch, then salts the last few yards of walk up to the door by hand. Snow lies different on open farmland than it does in town — long, low drifts instead of tall ones, but just as capable of stranding a vehicle that doesn't respect them. Eventually the lane runs open end to end, and the mailbox post is the only thing still wearing a cap of white.
