The Greene County courthouse clock is usually the only light going in downtown Bloomfield when American Excavating starts a winter morning. Snow behaves differently here than farther north — heavier, wetter, the kind that packs into ice by midday if a driveway sits too long uncleared — so the trucks run early, blades down, working outward from the square into the neighborhoods around it. The same equipment that grades a building site in summer pushes snow off a long rural driveway in January, one steady pass after another. Steps and walks get cleared by hand and salted after, so the ice never gets a foothold. Downtown's streets are down to bare brick and pavement well before the courthouse doors open for the day.
