Bedford grew up on limestone, and the same hills quarried down to bare stone for a century still shape how snow moves through town — collecting in the old quarry hollows long after the streets above have been scraped clear. Stiffler Enterprises works those streets first, keeping the drives and walks open in a town where the buildings themselves, cut from local stone, have outlasted plenty of hard winters before this one. Out toward the White River, the ground gets steep and karst-riddled, full of sinks and rises that make drifting unpredictable — a driveway calm one week can bank hard the next depending on which way the wind comes off the hills. The crew treats that unpredictability as part of the job, checking known trouble spots before they become someone's blocked-in Tuesday morning.
