Upriver from Wood River the Piasa bird still watches the road from its limestone wall, painted where the Mississippi runs hard against the bluff. Piasa Lawn Company borrows that name and works the flat green side of the same country, mowing through a long Illinois spring, string trimming fence lines, edging drives and walks until a yard has a border you can read from the street. May is generous here, rain every few days and growth you can measure by hand, and keeping pace with it is most of the craft. Leaf cleanup closes out the year once the wind turns. A lawn cut clean under that river country looks like something the place approves of.
