Spring is slow to commit this close to Lake Michigan; the water holds its cold well into April, so Waukegan greens up a week or two behind the towns further inland, and the green when it comes is all the more welcome for the wait. Zavtek Landscape starts the year in that window — raking winter out of the beds, clearing what the wind left along the ravines and park edges, cutting the first growth before it gets rangy, laying fresh mulch while the ground is still dark and damp. Then it settles into the season: mowing, trimming, clean edges, and a thorough sweep-up once the leaves come down in October. Watching a tired March yard turn into something worth sitting in front of by Memorial Day is a genuinely satisfying arc. Waukegan makes you earn spring, which is probably why it looks so good here.
