Before the sun clears the water off the Waukegan lakefront, Lake Michigan goes the color of the inside of a shell — rose along the horizon, grey underneath, the whole city still holding its breath. Power In Pink, Inc. is usually already moving by then: mowing routes in summer, and in winter plowing drives and lots, clearing walks, spreading salt where the shade will keep the ice honest all day. The pleasure is in the contrast — a lawn finished with the edges cut sharp in July, a driveway opened square to the street in February, both of them small acts of order handed back to somebody's morning. Weather here is generous with variety and stingy with warning, so the work adapts. What stays the same is arriving early and finishing properly.
