Waukegan hides its best green in the ravines — those wooded folds near Bowen Park where the Waukegan River works its way down toward Lake Michigan and June light comes through the canopy in slats. HMC Landscaping keeps lawns on the blocks above those slopes, where a yard can be deep shade at one corner and full sun at the other, and the grass has opinions about both. There is a real pleasure in the cut here: the mower coming out of a damp shaded corner into open light, the stripe holding true, the edge along the walk clean enough to run a thumb down. Beds get their mulch in spring, leaves come off before the ground turns, and the lawn goes into the cold looking cared for rather than merely finished. It is patient work in a city that has always carried more countryside inside it than strangers expect.
