A January storm comes at Waukegan sideways, off the lake and down the Amstutz, and by midnight the driveways are gone under it. DC Snow Removal is up in that hour — plow down, beacon turning, the streets to itself. Lots get opened, drives cut through to pavement, walks shoveled and salted so the morning can happen on time. There is real pride in a drive cleared before the first alarm goes off, in a lot that looks like the storm skipped it. Cold work, quiet town, headlights and a long pushed bank of snow.
