Valmeyer keeps two elevations: the bottomland spread along the Mississippi and the bluff-top streets that look down on it, and Russell Services mows in both. On a summer morning the mist sits low over the river flats while the yards up on the limestone are already dry enough to cut. The work here is mowing, trimming, and edging — a line held straight along a driveway, a lawn left striped and even, the cuttings cleared off the walk before the trailer gate goes up. Sinkhole country makes for uneven ground, so the deck gets set with care and the corners get walked before they get cut. By evening, when the light runs long over the bluff, the block reads tidy from one end to the other.
