At four in the morning the side streets off Cunningham Avenue are one long unbroken white, with a single porch light burning somewhere down the block and nothing else moving. That is the hour Call Eddie is out, a snow removal operation plowing driveways, opening parking areas, shoveling steps and front walks, and putting salt where the ice sets up hardest. Snow around Urbana usually comes in on a northwest wind that packs it into the mouth of every drive, right where the road plow has already gone by once. Getting there first is the entire point: someone opens a door at six, and the way out is simply there. Small streets, small favors, finished before the town is awake.
