Downtown Urbana wakes in layers: first the streetlights on their long stems, then the courthouse clock tower catching a gray east light, then the doors. A.T.S. Custom Construction works the hours before all of that — a construction outfit that turns its winter attention to plowing lots and drives, opening walkways, and cutting a clear path to every entrance. Snow on this flat country does not so much fall as travel, sliding low across open ground until it stacks against a curb or a loading dock. The work is geometry: square corners at the lot lines, piles set where they will not blind a driver backing out, salt laid thin and even. By the time the first car turns off Main Street, the pavement is simply pavement again.
