West of Tuscola the Kaskaskia River winds through its band of timber, low and brown and far older than the grid of fields laid around it. Kaskaskia outdoor specialties LLC takes its name from that water and its work from the ground the river drains — mowing, trimming, edging and seasonal cleanups on properties out along the county roads and in town. Yards near the timber behave differently: more shade, more leaf litter, softer footing after a rain, all of which changes how and when you cut. Reading that is the craft, and the result is turf that stays even instead of scalped in one corner and shaggy in the next. In October, with the bottoms turning color and a yard raked down to clean grass, the whole place looks intentional.
