East of Tuscola the section roads run straight to the horizon, and on an early-summer morning fog sits waist-high over the beans until the sun burns through it. JN's Services is already moving in that fog, trailer behind, the first yard of the day waiting with dew still on it. The work is steady and unhurried — mowing, trimming, edging, hauling clippings, opening a property up in spring and closing it down when the leaves let go. Out here a mowed lawn is a small, deliberate rectangle of order inside a very large amount of open country, and holding it takes turning up every week without fail. By the time the fog lifts, three properties are behind them and the day still feels new.
