A stretch of the old highway still runs beside Towanda, its narrow pavement kept as a parkway now, and in a January blow the snow crosses it in low white ribbons that never stop moving. Biddle Construction takes a storm on the schedule that road always kept — early, steady, and going somewhere. Drives and lots are opened wide and scraped down, the ridge left at the road gets cut, walks are cleared and treated, and the piles are set downwind so the next gust cannot simply put them back. Out on the Grand Prairie nothing breaks the wind between here and the county line, so a route is never finished after one pass. Coming back is the job, and a drive still open at dinnertime is the proof.
