Before sunrise the eastern sky over the fields goes the color of a struck match, and by then the trucks are already out. Swingler Construction keeps builder's hours in winter, turning skid loaders and blades onto the drives, lots and approaches of Teutopolis while the snow is still soft enough to move easily. Building teaches patience with corners — the tight turn beside a garage, the pinch between a dumpster and a curb, the pocket every wide pass leaves behind — and those are the places finished by hand. Walks are cleared and salted, and the banks are stacked where they will not creep back across an entrance in the next thaw. Clean work, done early, and the rest of the day belongs to everybody else.
