By the middle of August the air over Summit is thick and sweet, and the plume from the corn mill stands straight up in it like a marker for the whole southwest side. Moore Hedgeworks spends those long middays in the yards below: mowing on the week's turn, running the trimmer along fences and foundations, cutting the walk lines, and clearing the cuttings so a lawn reads as finished rather than merely shortened. Growth is relentless in a wet Illinois summer — skip a week and the shape is gone. What it comes down to is geometry: straight passes, an even cut, a boundary you can see from the sidewalk. Come fall the leaf work takes over, and the yards go quiet again.
