Between the Des Plaines and the ship canal, Summit's blocks run tight and the tree crowns meet over the alleys. Abel's Tree Service does close-quarters work — trimming limbs back off gutters and garages, pruning parkway trees so a delivery truck can pass without tearing at them, removing the maples and elms that have finished. Ice loads a canopy here until something has to give, and the following day means saws and a chipper working one block at a time until the walks and the drives are clear again. There is rarely room to lay a tree down whole in a village built shoulder to shoulder, so it comes apart in pieces, in order, with the fence and the rose bushes untouched. When the parkway is swept and the alley is passable, the trip has done exactly what it set out to do.
