At four in the morning in February, the wind off the open farmland west of Aurora can lift fresh snow and lay it across Sugar Grove's roads and driveways in long, sculpted drifts. O'Donnell Excavating & Trucking, Inc., an excavating and trucking business, handles snow removal here, cutting paths through those drifts while most of the village is still asleep. Where new neighborhoods sit beside wide Kane County fields, the snow keeps moving until somebody moves it for good. The village's name recalls a grove of sugar maples, and in the deep cold their bare branches stand black against the white. When the first commuters pull out onto cleared pavement, the night's work shows in every dark, open stretch of asphalt.
