Up in Jo Daviess County the glaciers never bothered to flatten anything, so the roads climb and drop and the high ground around Stockton catches weather before the valleys know it is coming. SnowX exists for those days — plowing drives and lots, clearing walks with shovel and blower, and salting the grades where a car would otherwise think twice. Wind along these ridges can rebuild a drift in twenty minutes, so the job is less one pass than staying ahead of it until the sky finally lets go. There is something worth rising for in a clean lane cut down a long hill at five in the morning, the drift wall standing sharp on both sides and gravel showing through. Northwest Illinois winters ask a lot, and this is the shape of the answer.
