By September the light around Steuben comes in low and long, and the lawns finally slow down after a summer of being chased. That is the season for tidying: a cut kept regular into October, trimming around the posts and the tree rings, a firm edge on the walk and the drive, then leaf after leaf gathered off the grass until the branches stand bare. Through the growing months it is simply mowing on the week and staying ahead of the growth, whatever the rain does. Turf holds better cut on a schedule than rescued from a jungle. Coming back to a yard you keep and finding it even, green and square at the corners is the good part of the job.
