There is a half hour after sunrise in St. Francis when every lawn in town is silver with dew and the first mower of the day leaves a dark trail behind it. That is when the week starts. Cutting runs on a set schedule through the growing season, blades kept keen so the grass heals instead of browning at the tips, with hand trimming where the deck cannot reach — the swing-set legs, the spigot, the corner of the stoop — and an edge cut where turf meets the drive. In autumn those same yards get raked out, leaves off the grass and out of the corners the wind fills. A lawn drying in the sun by mid-morning is a plain, good sight, and it is the reason for the early start.
