Winter arrives in St. Charles from the open prairie west of Randall Road, a long grey shove of wind with the snow riding sideways inside it. Arellano Landscaping gets out ahead of that — plowing driveways, cutting walkways down to pavement, spreading salt on the steps before anybody's first coffee. Come May the same trucks trade blades for mowers, and the week turns to mowing, string trimming and edging on the shaded streets off Prairie. There is a plain satisfaction in a drive cleared to bare blacktop at five in the morning, and the same one in a yard that looks squared away by supper. Both halves of that year belong to Arellano Landscaping.
