At four in the morning, when the wind comes across the Little Calumet with nothing to slow it, South Holland is a grid of dark driveways waiting. South Suburban Maintenance Inc. is out in it, plowing lots and drives, opening walkways down to bare pavement, spreading salt at the doorways where ice sets hardest. Come April those same routes go green and the work turns to mowing, string trimming and keeping the lawn edges honest. Freight and highway traffic through this corner of Cook County never really stops, which is why an entrance cleared before the first shift matters. There is a quiet satisfaction in a lot that looks like the storm went around it.
