The Rock River bends past South Beloit slow and wide, and in July the herons stand in it like they are being paid by the hour. CP's Lawn Service works the yards along that water and back up into the neighborhoods behind it — mowing, trimming, edging, and clearing away whatever the season drops. River-bottom ground grows grass thick and quick, especially after the storms that come down out of Wisconsin. Finishing a lawn on a humid evening, edges tight and the smell of cut grass still hanging around, is a decent way to end a day. Winnebago County summers are short, and this work fills them.
