On a May Saturday in Skokie half the block is outdoors, and the alleys behind the brick bungalows smell of cut grass by ten in the morning. G & A Mancera Landscaping Inc adds to that chorus: mowers down the length of a lawn, trimmer around the gangway and the garage apron, edger opening a seam along the sidewalk that was not visible the week before. Clippings get cleared so the walk stays a walk. Cleanups in spring and again in fall bookend the routine. It is everyday upkeep, and it is what makes a street of near-identical houses each look like somebody's.
