In February the Skokie Lagoons go glass-gray, and the spruces standing in front yards are about the only color left on a block. Evergreen Landscapes LLC is busiest then, plowing driveways, clearing walks and steps, salting the ice that forms along the north side of a house where the sun never quite reaches. When the thaw comes, attention shifts to lawns: cleanups, mowing, trimming, edging, week after week through the green months. The village asks for two entirely different skills and gives you roughly a month to change over. Both ends of it finish the same way, with a property that plainly looks after itself because somebody looked after it.
