Morning in Shipman starts wet — dew heavy enough to soak a boot, mist lying in the low ground where the land rolls off toward Macoupin Creek. Luxury lawn care waits for it to burn off, then goes to work mowing, string trimming, edging along the walks, and blowing the drive clear once the cut is finished. The country between here and the river bluffs is all gentle rises, so the lawns run in slopes and terraces and a straight stripe takes some doing. By late afternoon the yards along the blacktop look sharp-edged and settled into place. In fall the oaks and hickories let go in waves, and the cleanup clears the beds and gutters and takes it all away.
