The village water tower stands over the rooftops here, and from that height Schaumburg is a quilt of small green rectangles. Lawn Care by Gene takes them one at a time: mow, run the trimmer down the fence line, edge the walk, blow the drive clean, on to the next. Cut in alternating passes, an ordinary front yard picks up a stripe that catches the low evening light. The mowing weeks are bookended by clearings, one in April and one in November, with mulch once the beds are open. It is unhurried work, and it shows in the finish.
