Winter in southern Illinois rarely announces itself with snowbanks; it comes up the Ohio Valley as sleet at two in the morning and glazes everything by four. L&D DirtyJobs works those nights around Saline — plowing what falls, scraping what freezes, spreading salt across drives, lots and walkways so people can get out. Storms are fewer down here than up north, which only makes each one harder on a town that isn't built around them. Being the reason a car reaches the highway at dawn is the entire point of the work. Saline and the towns close by, whenever the pavement turns.
