South of Saint Joseph the Salt Fork slips along under its ribbon of timber, and the fields on either side go from black to green in about three weeks every spring. Spring Green keeps lawns on that same clock — mowing, trimming and edging from the first flush of April growth through the thick, fast weeks of June. A yard cut on rhythm looks different from one cut when somebody remembers: stripes even, corners closed, no ragged collar left around the trees. Evening light lasts a long while out here, and it is a good hour to stand at the road and look back down a finished lawn.
