Saint Anne sits on flat black ground south of the Kankakee, where the fields run to the horizon and the sky does most of the talking. Through the green months Pomaranski Landscape Services mows, trims, edges and clears yards out, holding a tidy line against all that open country. Then the year flips and the work reverses: plowing drives and lots, shoveling walks and entryways, and salting the packed places that go slick at the end of a thaw. A yard here has no shelter in either direction — full sun in July, full weather in January. Two halves of a year, one standard: a place that looks kept, whatever the sky is doing.
