St. Anne wakes up around its brick church, and in winter the tower is the first thing to come back out of the dark once the snow quits. Storms cross the flat sandy country east of the Kankakee with room to build, so drifts pile against anything standing — a garage wall, a windbreak, a parked truck. Plowing goes drive by drive through the village and out the county roads toward Momence and Aroma Park, blades pushing back to the grass line, shovels finishing what a truck cannot reach at the steps. The north-facing walks, the ones that never catch sun in January, get treated so they stay walkable all day. By the time the bell rings, the way in is clear.
