West of Rockford the land opens toward Winnebago and Pecatonica, and once the wind finds those bare fields the snow does not so much fall as travel. Central IL Snow Removal plows through that — long farm drives, in-town driveways, lots and walkways — pushing drifts well back so the next round has somewhere to go. Salting and scraping take care of the glaze that forms on a bright, bitter morning after. Winter out here is a season of return visits, and that is understood going in. A cleared lane running across an open yard, with the wind still combing the fields beyond it, is a good thing to leave behind.
