Around Roanoke the fields go in during May, and for a few weeks the whole countryside is dirt and intention. In the village the grass has already made up its mind, and Amigoni Construction is out on the first cuts of the year, mowing, trimming around trees and posts, edging the drives back to a clean line after a winter of creep. Spring cleanups clear whatever the wind piled into the corners over the cold months. Cutting a lawn while the corn is still stitching itself into rows is one of the better hours in central Illinois. Fields and yards both come out of that month looking deliberate.
