Wind is the constant in Rantoul. It crosses the open sections with nothing to slow it, rattling the fence rows out past the old Chanute airfield, and it shapes both halves of Miller Outdoor Services' year. In the green months the work is mowing on a weekly turn, edging, trimming, and cleanups in spring and again when the leaves finally let go. In the white months it is plowing driveways and lots, clearing walks, and salting the slick spots — and out here the wind will fill a cleared lane back in while you are still working the next one, so you come back around. A property looked after in July and again in January is a property somebody knows by heart.
