A yard in Radnor Township lives two lives. Half the year it is mowing and edging and trimming, with cleanups in spring and again when the leaves come down, all of it stacked into the long humid stretch between the last frost and the first. The other half it is a driveway under four inches at six in the morning, and Spring Green out plowing it back to pavement, shoveling the front walk, laying salt where the slope wants to glaze over. Snow reaches this country on a wind that has crossed a great deal of open ground west of the Illinois River, and it does not knock first. Same properties, same map, different tool on the truck.
