High on the bluff, Villa Katherine keeps its odd Moorish towers pointed at the Mississippi, and in October the river below goes the color of pewter. Voss Lawn and Landscape LLC works those bluff-side streets through the fall, mowing while there is still growth in the ground and then clearing leaf after leaf off lawns that catch everything the wind carries up from the water. By January the same slopes are the problem: driveways pitched toward the street, walks that glaze over before dawn, all of it plowed open and treated so the day can start on time. There is a plain pride in standing at the top of a cleared drive and seeing the pavement dark and dry the length of it. Quincy and the towns nearby get both halves of that year.
