Five in the morning in January, and Quincy is a town of orange plow lights and steam rising off the grates. Bergman Nurseries Inc runs its snow work in those hours, blades down on lots and drives while the rest of the Gem City is still under blankets. Snow arrives here on a hard northwest wind that crosses the Mississippi with nothing to slow it, and it starts drifting the moment it lands. There is real pride in a lot scraped down to dark pavement and salted at the corners before the first car turns in. Quincy and the nearby towns get that same early start.
