By the middle of July, Boone County turns green all the way to the tree line, the roadside ditches full of chicory and the lake water east of the village warm enough to swim in by noon. Summer's Turf LLC works right through that heat, mowing Poplar Grove lawns on a weekly rhythm and trimming close along fences, foundations and the shoulders of gravel drives. Thick summer turf is unforgiving — miss a week and everyone can see it — so the schedule matters as much as the machine. What comes out of it is a lawn that looks deliberate: an even height, a defined edge at the walk, the grass laid all one direction in the low evening sun. That is the whole point of the work, and it never stops being satisfying.
