Old Route 40 still runs through Pocahontas, and when a storm crosses Bond County it comes fast and low over open ground. Slatton Outdoor Services works those hours, plowing drives and lots, shoveling and blowing walks open, and spreading salt where ice sets up along the shaded north sides. Snow here is often the heavy, wet kind that arrives near freezing and turns to rutted concrete by noon if nobody touches it. So the trucks move early, before the National Road fills with traffic and before the coffee is on in most kitchens in town. A drive scraped down to bare pavement with the banks pushed back off the mailbox is a small thing, and on a February morning it is not a small thing at all.
