By two in the morning the wind has had the whole open country between Plainfield and Oswego to build in, and it lays snow across driveways in long fins that a plow has to break twice. Yellowstone Landscape is out in it — clearing lots and drives, cutting drifts back to pavement, shoveling walks and steps down to something a boot can trust, then salting and de-icing before the melt gets a chance to set up like glass. Out past Lake Renwick the fields give a storm nowhere to stop, so the same driveway can fill in again behind you; the work is watching the wind as much as the sky. There's a particular pride in the hour before dawn along Route 59, when the lots sit black and square and the walkways read clean under the lights. That is the whole aim — a drive opened before the first cup of coffee, and a village that simply goes about its Tuesday.
