West of the city the ground opens up and the wind arrives off the fields with nothing to slow it, all the way in from Hanna City and Edwards. Lawn Wolf runs that direction at dusk, when the air finally cools — mowing acre lots and long ditch banks, trimming around mailbox posts and outbuildings, edging drives that end a hundred feet back from the road. Grass out here comes on rough and fast in a wet June, and it takes an appetite to stay ahead of it. Little looks better than a big lot brought down even, the stripes running away toward the fence in the last of the light. Then the trailer gate goes up, and the prairie goes dark all at once.
