Codding’s Lawn

About Codding’s Lawn

September in Peoria comes in at a slant — low gold light through the ravine oaks near Bradley Park, and the grass growing slower but greener for it. Codding's Lawn keeps its rhythm right through that turn: weekly mowing, trimming along ravine fences and around the hackberries, edging the walks that curl down toward the street, cleanups as the leaves begin letting go. Autumn here is generous, weeks of it, and it rewards anyone still showing up with a mower. The cut lines run true across yards that have held the same shape for a hundred years. When the light goes coppery around five o'clock, the whole block looks looked-after, and that is the entire point.
