Up And Running

About Up And Running

The northwest wind crosses the Sangamon County prairie with next to nothing in its way, and by three in the morning it has laid a fresh ridge across every drive in Pawnee. Up And Running is out in the middle of that, plowing, blading and shoveling so drives and lots stand open before the commute toward Springfield begins to move. This old coal town is laid out on a tight grid, which makes for quick routes and unforgiving corners; the piles have to end up somewhere that still leaves room to turn a truck. When the sky finally lightens and the first cars pull onto clean pavement without giving it a thought, the night has done what it was for. The name is more or less the job description.
