Palos Park kept its trees, which is the loveliest thing about the village and the trickiest thing at three in the morning in January — streets curving under old oaks, woodland and bridle-path edges where drifts sit deep in the shade. Palos Park Village Public Work takes the routes while a storm is still coming down: plowing the streets, opening the municipal lots, salting the grades and the intersections so the earliest shift can get out of the neighborhood. It is unshowy hourly work done while the town sleeps, and the reward is a village that wakes up able to move. By breakfast the pavement is dark and wet again under the branches, the curbs cut back, the corners sighted clear. Nothing about it looks like an accomplishment, and that is how you know it went well.
