By late afternoon in January the light over the Fox River goes the color of pewter, and the snow that was only a rumor at noon has begun stacking against the garage doors up in Boulder Hill. Twin Oaks Landscaping works the long half of that storm — the part after supper, when the wind comes around and starts filling in every cut you made. So they come back, and that second pass is the difference between a driveway that has been plowed and a driveway a person can actually use, banks pushed wide, steps and walks opened down to the concrete, a clean line of traction laid where the car has to turn. There is real satisfaction in standing at the end of it, engine ticking, looking back at a piece of pavement that has been given back to the family who lives there. Someone pulls out at half past five toward Route 71 in the blue dark and thinks about nothing at all. That is the job done right.
